Asian Cinevision Launches 23rd Asian American International Film Festival

New York, NY -- Summer 2000

     Asian CineVision (ACV), the internationally recognized Asian American media arts center based in New York, is proud to present the 23rd Asian American International Film Festival (AAIFF), the world's first and longest running festival devoted to showcasing the works of Asian and Asian American filmmakers.

     The 23rd AAIFF will feature the latest works of renowned and emerging Asian and Asian American directors, acclaimed documentaries and shorts, special screenings of rare films and filmmaking workshops and discussion panels.

Highlights at the 23rd AAIFF include:

"Buenos Aires Zero Degree" -- Kwan Pun Leung's documentary about the making of Wong Kar Wai's "Happy Together"

"Dead Knot" - a newly restored 1969 short film written by and starring action maestro John Woo as a gay man

"First Person Plural" - Deann Borshay Liem's praised Korean adoptee documentary

"I.K.U." - Shu Lea Chang's Japanese sci-fi erotica and unofficial sequel to Ridley Scott's Blade Runner

"Madadayo" - Akira Kurosawa's final directorial masterpiece

"Peppermint Candy" -- Lee Chang-Dong's internationally acclaimed drama

"The Pink Palace" -- Celebrated playwright Jessica Hagedorn's new animated series

"Running Out of Time" -- Johnnie To's award-winning Hong Kong crime thriller

"So Close to Paradise" -- Wang Xiaoshuai's controversial Chinese social drama Panel Discussions - with celebrity and industry guests including actor John Lone, actress Sandra Oh, director Wonsuk Chin (Too Tired to Die), award-winning Jessica Hagedorn (Dogeaters, The Gang of Love) and Richard Pena (Film Society of Lincoln Center)

     Additionally, the 23rd AAIFF also welcomes this year's featured Hong Kong actor Andy Lau -- winner of the 2000 Hong Kong Film Award (HK's equivalent of the Academy Award) for Best Actor -- who will be making his first North American film festival appearance to introduce "Running Out of Time."
